Books for children about weather

Let’s finish off this collection of Weather EFL ESL teaching resources with some books. You could use these for a story time at the end of the lesson or even base a whole lesson on one book and retell the story together.

Snow

  • The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats – this is a lovely book about a little boy discovering the snow in the city. You can watch a video of the story The Snowy Day Read-aloud. You could use it to talk about fun activities to do in the snow or about how the snow makes you feel?
  • Once Upon a Northern Night by Jean E. Pendziwol, illustrated by Isabelle Arsenault – You can watch a video with music of the story Once Upon a Northern Night. This beautifully illustrated story shows everything that can happen in a snowy night. Animals come out to eat and to play and the northern lights illuminate the snowy landscape. Can you invent a story about the animals in the snow? What can they see? What do they do?

Rain and storms

  • TAP TAP BOOM BOOM by Elizabeth Bluemle – Find a reading of it here. What sounds does a thunderstorm make? You can have lots of fun with this book reenacting the sounds of a storm as it arrives.
  • Rain by Linda Ashman, illustrations by Christian Robinson – Find a read aloud here. Do you like the rain? Does it make you feel happy or sad? This book has lovely illustrations and is really fun to read. It compares the reactions of the little boy who loves the rain and the man who really doesn’t. What will happen when they meet up?

Sun and wind

  • A Year with the Wind by Hanna Konola – Find a read aloud here. This book looks at how the wind changes during the year so it’s useful if you’re learning the names of the months or the seasons. How does the wind change during the year? What changes does it make for us?
